A compact assault rifle developed in the USA based on the M16A2. It was originally intended for combat vehicle crews and operators of technical equipment. In time, however, as mechanized infantry and auxiliary troops came to make up the majority of the armed forces, the M4A1 was adopted almost universally by the US Army, the carbines convenience far outweighing its modest drop in stats compared to a full-length rifle.
